The HRB Blog–IACHR Portal is a division of the Human Rights Brief, a student-run publication of the Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Law at American University’s Washington College of Law (WCL) with approximately 6,000 subscribers in over 130 different countries. IACHR Portal postings cover hearings of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), an autonomous organ of the Organization of American States (OAS) and one of two bodies in the Inter-American system for human rights: the IACHR sits in Washington, DC and the second body in the inter-American system, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, sits in San José de Costa Rica.
The IACHR Portal seeks to promote transparency within the inter-American system of human rights; foster dialogue and debate around the IACHR’s jurisprudence among scholars, practitioners, students and citizens; provide a forum to help citizen’s groups ensure that their governments’ comply with their international human rights obligations; and serve as a pedagogical tool for students to learn the art of human rights writing and reporting.
The IACHR Portal is a division of the Human Rights Brief and began as a pilot initiative of the Human Righr Brief during the IACHR’s 133 Period of Sessions. WCL students found the Human Rights Brief 1994, during a time when the internet was not the ubiquitous medium for communication that it is today. The IACHR Portal grew from an initiative to keep the Human Rights Brief in touch with growing technologies. We welcome your suggestions and comments on how to improve our coverage.
